Physical Education
Each class is allocated two hours per week for Physical Education; one indoor and one outdoor session. This is supplemented by a range of after school sports clubs and coaches. Pupils are encouraged to work at their own level, in a safe but challenging environment. The school also has a long history of fielding school teams in various sports such as football, netball, tag rugby, cricket and athletics. The emphasis is on developing a team spirit and enjoyment of the game itself although success is good too and should be celebrated!
The Physical Education programme of knowledge, skills and understanding is taught through six main areas:
- Gymnastics – In gymnastics, pupils work towards creating, practising and performing fluent sequences for the floor and the apparatus.
- Dance - Pupils have the opportunities to create and perform dances using a range of movement patterns, including those from different times, places and cultures.
- Outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) – This area allows pupils to work with others to meet challenges and involves orienteering and using problem-solving skills.
- Athletics – Athletics focus on the development of skills and technique needed for running, jumping and throwing events.
- Swimming - Lessons currently take place in Key Stage 2 and include water based survival skills. Pupils work towards being able to swim unaided.
Supplementary activities – To compliment the above activities and to expose the pupils to a wide range of sporting activities, the school invites coaches and development officers to lead lessons across all year groups in their area of expertise. This includes football, tag-rugby, cricket, fencing, golf, Gaelic football, dance and tennis.
